Overview

Olfactory receptor family 9 subfamily G member 1 (OR9G1) is a member of the large olfactory receptor gene family and encodes a protein belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily[1][3]. Olfactory receptors, including OR9G1, are primarily expressed in the olfactory epithelium of the nasal cavity, where they are responsible for the detection of odorant molecules and initiation of neuronal signals that contribute to the sense of smell[1][2]. These receptors feature a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure similar to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. While olfactory receptors are best recognized for their role in odor perception and the olfactory signaling pathway, increasing evidence suggests that olfactory receptors can also be expressed outside the olfactory system, indicating broader physiological roles and a possible implication in diseases when dysregulated[3]. To date, no specific drugs or biomarkers are associated with OR9G1, and its clinical significance as a direct therapeutic or diagnostic target is not established. Variants in olfactory receptor genes have been linked to interindividual differences in odor perception, but OR9G1 has not been assigned a major non-olfactory disease association[2][3].
