While olfactory receptors are typically G protein-coupled receptors involved in odorant detection, OR9H1 contains mutations rendering it nonfunctional and is not involved in the canonical olfactory pathway. The gene shares sequence homology with functional olfactory receptors, and its designation as a pseudogene means it lacks the ability to produce a full-length, functional receptor protein. As such, it does not participate in odor recognition or signal transduction[4][5]. There is no evidence of its involvement in disease, no therapeutic targeting, nor any use as a biomarker. The designation “seven transmembrane helix receptor” refers to its homology rather than its activity, as the protein product—if expressed at all—is truncated or mutated and thus inactive. OR9H1 is notable for being part of the large repertoire of human olfactory receptor pseudogenes, highlighting the evolutionary loss of olfactory receptor function in humans[4][5].
