OR9N1P (Olfactory receptor family 9 subfamily N member 1 pseudogene) is a human pseudogene located on chromosome 7 and is a member of the large olfactory receptor family. Unlike functional olfactory receptor genes, it does *not* encode a protein capable of odorant recognition or signal transduction. Olfactory receptor pseudogenes persist in the genome due to low selection pressure to maintain function, and there is no current evidence of functional RNAs or proteins derived from this locus in humans. The canonical olfactory receptor proteins are G protein-coupled receptors responsible for smell sensation; however, OR9N1P annotation and evidence indicate it represents a nonfunctional remnant of such a gene. There are rare cases of "pseudo-pseudogenes" with unexpected function in other species, but no such phenomenon has been reported for OR9N1P in humans.
