Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) are glial cells in the central nervous system that serve as precursors to oligodendrocytes, the myelin-producing cells. OPCs are identified by markers such as PDGFRA, CSPG4/NG2, SOX10, and OLIG2. Their primary function is to generate oligodendrocytes, but they also respond to environmental changes, support the blood-brain barrier, and mediate neuroinflammation. OPCs are a therapeutic target for remyelination strategies in diseases like multiple sclerosis.
