The Omeprazole–amoxicillin intermolecular complex refers to the physical and chemical interaction between the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) omeprazole and the beta-lactam antibiotic amoxicillin. Consequently, this entity represents a pharmacological interaction used to optimize therapeutic outcomes rather than a site of drug action in the human body. It is often administered as part of a triple therapy regimen including a second antibiotic like clarithromycin.
Omeprazole inhibits the gastric H+/K+-ATPase (proton pump), while amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). The complexation facilitates increased amoxicillin stability via omeprazole-induced pH elevation.
