The ON-bipolar cell plasma membrane is the lipid bilayer that encloses ON-bipolar cells, a specialized type of interneuron in the retina involved in processing visual signals. It contains proteins and receptors, notably the metabotropic glutamate receptor mGluR6, which is critical for the ON pathway of visual signal transmission. Glutamate from photoreceptors acts on mGluR6 at the dendritic tips of these cells to mediate vision-related signal inversion in response to light[2]. The membrane supports essential synaptic signaling, ion transport, and compartmentalization involved in retinal circuitry but is not a drug target in itself.
