Overview
Oncogene proteins, also known as oncoproteins, are the products of oncogenes—genes that have the potential to cause cancer. These proteins play a central role in regulating or synthesizing other proteins linked to tumorigenic cell growth. Normally, their precursor genes (proto-oncogenes) are involved in essential cellular functions such as cell growth, division, and survival. When proto-oncogenes become mutated or dysregulated, they transform into oncogenes and produce oncoproteins that drive uncontrolled cellular proliferation.
