Oncomodulin (OCM)

Target
OCM
Molecular classification
Parvalbumin family, Calcium-binding protein
01

Overview

Oncomodulin is a small, acidic calcium-binding protein of the parvalbumin family that promotes nerve regeneration, particularly after injury. It is expressed by macrophages during inflammation and in specific tissues like the retina, inner ear, and placenta. Its regenerative effects are mediated through the ArmC10 receptor and are enhanced by elevated intracellular cAMP levels. Oncomodulin differs structurally and functionally from other parvalbumins, exhibiting unique calcium-binding properties and conformational changes.

02

Mechanism of action

Oncomodulin binds to ArmC10 receptor, promoting axon regeneration post-injury. Requires elevated intracellular cAMP levels for enhanced activity.
