Plasma Colloid Oncotic Pressure (PCOP)

Target
PCOP
Molecular classification
Physiological property
01

Overview

Plasma colloid oncotic pressure is the osmotic pressure generated by plasma proteins, primarily albumin, in the blood. This force pulls water into the circulatory system, counterbalancing hydrostatic pressure and maintaining fluid balance between blood vessels and interstitial spaces. Reduced oncotic pressure, often due to hypoalbuminemia, can lead to edema. It is a critical parameter in fluid management, especially in critically ill patients.
