Oncotic Pressure Regulation via Colloid Osmotic Effect

Molecular classification
Physiological Process, Biophysical Property
01

Overview

Oncotic pressure, also known as colloid osmotic pressure, is a form of osmotic pressure exerted by plasma proteins—primarily albumin—within the blood vessels. This force draws water into the circulatory system from surrounding tissues, counterbalancing hydrostatic pressure that pushes fluid out of capillaries. The regulation of oncotic pressure is essential for maintaining proper fluid balance between blood plasma and interstitial spaces, thus playing a critical role in vascular volume homeostasis and tissue hydration. It is not a typical drug target, but a biophysical process.

Mechanism of action

The oncotic pressure is not directly targeted by drugs in the traditional sense (e.g., via receptor binding). Rather, interventions manage fluid balance by either directly increasing plasma protein concentration (albumin infusions), manipulating the osmotic gradient (icodextrin), or reducing overall fluid volume (diuretics).
