OOEP
Molecular classification

Overview

Oocyte-expressed protein homolog (OOEP) is a cytoplasmic and nuclear protein involved in oocyte maturation and early embryonic development. It is a key component of the subcortical maternal complex (SCMC), which is essential for the first divisions after fertilization. OOEP promotes RNA binding, regulates actin cytoskeleton dynamics critical for mitotic spindle formation and placement, and actively supports the homologous recombination-mediated DNA double-strand break repair pathway in oocytes. It is vital for oocyte survival, meiotic resumption, and symmetric zygotic division. Variants in OOEP are associated with developmental disorders including Temple syndrome and gestational trophoblastic neoplasm.
