Oocyte secreted protein 1 (OOSP1) is a secreted glycoprotein predominantly expressed in the oocytes of mammals such as mouse and bovine, and serves as a marker for oocyte-specific expression[1][2][3]. The protein contains a signal peptide, several N-linked glycosylation sites, and multiple conserved cysteines predicted to form disulfide bonds[2][3]. OOSP1 is not expressed or is minimally expressed outside the oocyte, although weak expression may exist in tissues like spleen or liver in some species[1][2]. Its primary biological function is believed to be in mediating communication between oocytes and surrounding somatic cells within the ovarian follicle, thus supporting processes essential for ovarian folliculogenesis and female fertility[2][3]. In bovine and mouse, OOSP1 transcripts are abundant in early-stage oocytes (germinal vesicle stage) and decline as development proceeds until they are undetectable at the blastocyst stage[1]. OOSP1 shares sequence similarity with placental-specific protein 1 (PLAC1), suggesting some evolutionary relatedness as secreted proteins[2][3]. There is currently no evidence that OOSP1 functions as a therapeutic drug target, no drugs or known mechanisms of pharmacological action, and no identified direct safety issues. Its utility is primarily as a molecular marker for developmental biology research and reproductive technology assessments[1][2][3][4].
