Overview

OOEP antisense RNA 1 (OOEP-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the OOEP gene, located on human chromosome 6[1]. As a natural antisense transcript (NAT), OOEP-AS1 is part of a class of RNA molecules that regulate gene expression at multiple levels, including transcriptional interference, modulation of chromatin structure, and possibly by affecting RNA splicing or stability[2][5]. These RNAs do not encode proteins and instead function through RNA-RNA, RNA-DNA, or RNA-protein interactions. The biological functions of NATs, including OOEP-AS1, include regulating the transcription of their sense counterparts, influencing chromatin state, and affecting alternative splicing, with broader roles in processes such as genomic imprinting and cellular responses to stress[2][5]. While some antisense RNAs play direct roles in disease such as cancer through modulation of oncogenes or tumor suppressors, there is currently no disease-specific or drug-targeting information for OOEP-AS1 itself.
