Overview

Oomycetes are a distinct class of fungus-like eukaryotic microorganisms within the Stramenopiles, forming a lineage known as Oomycota. Although historically classified as fungi due to their filamentous morphology and reproductive habits, molecular and phylogenetic studies place them closer to groups like brown algae and diatoms[1][2][5]. Oomycetes reproduce both asexually and sexually, with characteristic spore types: oospores (long-lived survival spores), sporangia (short-lived, aerially dispersed), and zoospores (motile, water-dispersed)[1][3]. Most members are pathogens or saprobes, with some causing devastating plant diseases such as late blight of potato and downy mildews[1][3][4][6]. Oomycete plant pathogens have had significant social and economic impacts; for example, Phytophthora infestans caused the Irish potato famine[3][5]. Oomycete pathogens are controlled with certain fungicides, but their ability to rapidly evolve resistance and their production of highly persistent spores present major agricultural challenges[3].
