OPA1 antisense RNA 1 (OPA1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA that is transcribed antisense to the OPA1 gene. Antisense RNAs such as OPA1-AS1 are involved in the regulation of their corresponding sense gene (in this case, OPA1) by mechanisms including transcriptional interference, RNA-RNA interaction, and chromatin modification. While OPA1 protein plays a crucial role in mitochondrial inner membrane fusion, regulation of cristae structure, and neuronal development, OPA1-AS1 is presumed to modulate the expression level of OPA1 by natural antisense RNA mechanisms, but there is currently very limited direct functional or disease-related information specific to OPA1-AS1 in the published literature[3]. Antisense long non-coding RNAs more generally are being explored as potential therapeutic targets or biomarkers, but OPA1-AS1 itself is not currently known as a drug target, and no drugs or clinical approaches specifically modulate this molecule. No evidence currently supports OPA1-AS1 as a therapeutic target or disease biomarker; the functional and pathological roles of OPA1-AS1 specifically remain to be elucidated.
