Ophthalmic anterior segment tissue is an anatomical designation encompassing the cornea, iris, ciliary body, and lens, which lie at the front of the eye ahead of the vitreous body. These tissues are essential for ocular function: they facilitate light refraction and focusing (cornea, lens), adjustment of depth of focus (ciliary body, lens), regulation of light entry (iris), and maintain intraocular homeostasis via aqueous humor production and drainage (ciliary body, corneal endothelium). Many common eye diseases—including glaucoma, cataract, and corneal infections—involve anterior segment tissues, and many ophthalmic drugs are designed to act upon these tissues, but "ophthalmic anterior segment tissues" itself is not a molecular therapeutic target.
