Overview

Ophthalmic artery blood flow (OABF) refers to the physiological volume and velocity of blood delivered through the ophthalmic artery, which is the primary source of oxygenated blood for the eye and its surrounding orbital structures (StatPearls, 2023). While OABF is a hemodynamic measurement rather than a molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, it is a critical clinical parameter used to assess ocular health and the efficacy of various therapies (PubMed, PMID: 33454321). Alterations in OABF, specifically reduced flow velocities and increased resistive indices, are significantly associated with the progression of primary open-angle glaucoma and other ischemic ocular conditions (NIH, 2021). Pharmacological agents, such as topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors like dorzolamide, are often evaluated for their ability to increase OABF and improve retrobulbar perfusion independently of their intraocular pressure-lowering effects (Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 2020). Consequently, OABF serves as a functional endpoint in drug development for neuroprotective strategies in ophthalmology, though its clinical utility is sometimes limited by the high variability inherent in Color Doppler Imaging measurements (Mayo Clinic, 2023).
