Overview

The ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN V1) is the smallest and most superior of the three divisions of the trigeminal nerve. It is a purely sensory nerve responsible for transmitting sensory information from the upper face, scalp, and parts of the nasal cavity and sinuses to the brain. It has three main branches: the frontal, lacrimal, and nasociliary nerves, each providing sensation to specific regions. While not a therapeutic target itself, its function and integrity are crucial for maintaining sensory input and reflexes in the ophthalmic region, and it is implicated in conditions like trigeminal neuralgia.
