Overview

The delta opioid receptor (DOR), also known as δ-opioid receptor or DOP, is a member of the opioid receptor family and a seven-transmembrane G protein-coupled receptor that primarily couples to inhibitory G proteins (Gi/G0). It mediates its effects through modulation of intracellular signaling pathways and is heavily expressed in the basal ganglia and neocortical regions of the brain. Activation reduces pain (especially chronic pain) and improves negative emotional states. DOR is considered a promising target for chronic pain management and the treatment of mood disorders.

Mechanism of action

Activation reduces neuronal excitability, inhibits adenylyl cyclase, modulates ion channels, and undergoes desensitization/internalization upon prolonged stimulation.
