The optic nerve, also known as cranial nerve II, is a paired nerve that transmits visual information from the retina to the brain's visual cortex (StatPearls, 2023). It is composed of approximately one million retinal ganglion cell axons and is considered an extension of the central nervous system (Wikipedia, 2024). While not a single molecular target, it is the primary site of damage in diseases such as glaucoma, optic neuritis, and Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Therapeutic interventions generally focus on protecting these axons from high intraocular pressure or inflammatory damage, rather than binding to the nerve as a single receptor (Glaucoma Research Foundation, 2024). Because the optic nerve lacks the ability to regenerate in adults, it is a major focus for research in neuroregeneration and gene therapy (NIH, 2023). Damage to the optic nerve often results in permanent visual field defects or total blindness, making its preservation a critical goal in ophthalmology.
The optic nerve is an anatomical structure and does not possess a single molecular mechanism of action; drugs associated with it typically function by reducing intraocular pressure, providing mitochondrial support, or exerting anti-inflammatory effects (StatPearls, 2023).
