Overview

Oral and gastrointestinal pathogenic bacteria collectively refers to a diverse group of bacterial species capable of causing disease in the oral cavity (e.g., Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis) and gastrointestinal tract (e.g., Salmonella enterica, Shigella, Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli pathotypes, Helicobacter pylori). These organisms may be commensals in healthy individuals but become opportunistic pathogens under certain conditions, or are exogenous pathogens that invade and colonize mucosal surfaces. This group encompasses Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, aerobes, anaerobes, and a variety of taxonomic groups. They contribute to diseases such as gastroenteritis, food poisoning, peptic ulcers, periodontitis, and systemic infections. Therapies are usually broad-spectrum or targeted antibiotics and, in some cases, vaccines or microbial interventions, but increasing antimicrobial resistance is a major safety concern[1][2][3][4].
