Overview

The oral and pharyngeal mucosa is the mucous membrane lining the oral cavity and the pharynx, serving as a critical physiological barrier and a primary site for localized drug action (StatPearls, 2023). It consists of a stratified squamous epithelium—which can be keratinized or non-keratinized depending on the mechanical demands of the region—and an underlying lamina propria containing connective tissue, blood vessels, and minor salivary glands (NIH, 2022). This tissue plays a vital role in protecting underlying structures from mechanical trauma, microbial invasion, and chemical irritation, while also facilitating sensory functions like taste and temperature perception. Pathologically, the mucosa is involved in conditions such as oral mucositis, aphthous stomatitis, and oropharyngeal cancers, making it a frequent focus for therapeutic intervention (PubMed, 2021). Although it is an anatomical region rather than a single protein target, it serves as a critical site for drug delivery and local therapeutic intervention, where drugs like anesthetics and corticosteroids interact with specific cellular components to alleviate pain and inflammation (ScienceDirect, 2020).
