Although it is an anatomical region rather than a single protein target, it serves as a critical site for drug delivery and local therapeutic intervention, where drugs like anesthetics and corticosteroids interact with specific cellular components to alleviate pain and inflammation (ScienceDirect, 2020).
Drugs applied to the oral and pharyngeal mucosa typically exert their effects by binding to specific molecular targets within the tissue layers, such as voltage-gated sodium channels for local anesthesia (e.g., lidocaine) or glucocorticoid receptors for anti-inflammatory effects (e.g., triamcinolone) (StatPearls, 2023).
