Oral bacteria and dental hard tissues refer to the complex ecological niche where the oral microbiome interacts with the mineralized structures of the teeth, including enamel, dentin, and cementum (StatPearls, 2023). This environment is the site of major oral pathologies; for instance, acidogenic bacteria like Streptococcus mutans form biofilms that ferment carbohydrates, producing organic acids that demineralize the hydroxyapatite matrix of the tooth (NIH, 2021). Therapeutic strategies targeting this system often involve antimicrobial agents to disrupt biofilms or remineralizing agents like fluoride that integrate into the hard tissue to form acid-resistant fluorapatite (ADA, 2022). Additionally, periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis can trigger inflammatory responses that degrade the supporting hard tissues like cementum and alveolar bone (CDC, 2020). Because this term encompasses a vast array of species and tissue types, it is characterized as a biological system or disease site rather than a single druggable molecular target.
Interventions act by inhibiting bacterial growth, disrupting biofilm architecture, neutralizing acid production, or promoting the remineralization of the hydroxyapatite crystal lattice in dental tissues (ADA, 2022; StatPearls, 2023).
