Oral Bacteria Glycolytic Enzymes

Overview

Oral bacteria glycolytic enzymes are a group of enzymes that catalyze the breakdown of carbohydrates (primarily sugars) into energy through the glycolysis pathway. This process is central to the metabolism of many oral bacteria, especially those implicated in dental caries, such as *Streptococcus mutans* and *Lactobacillus* species. The glycolytic pathway enables these bacteria to convert dietary sugars into organic acids (mainly lactic acid), which can demineralize tooth enamel and contribute to cavity formation. Key enzymes include enolase, phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK), and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase. Fluoride acts as a potent inhibitor of enolase, leading to reduced acid production. Targeting these enzymes has therapeutic implications for preventing dental caries.
