Oral bacterial cell membranes and associated proteins represent a collective therapeutic target for antimicrobial agents used in dental care. These membranes consist of a phospholipid bilayer that maintains cellular integrity and houses essential proteins involved in transport, energy production, and environmental sensing (Microbiology Spectrum, 2017). In the oral cavity, these structures are critical for the survival of pathogens associated with dental caries and periodontal diseases, such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis (NIDCR, 2021). Antiseptic drugs like chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride target these membranes by binding to negatively charged components, leading to increased permeability, leakage of intracellular ions, and cell lysis (StatPearls, 2023). While effective at reducing plaque and gingival inflammation, targeting these broad structures can sometimes lead to adverse effects like tooth discoloration or alterations in the commensal oral flora (Journal of Oral Microbiology, 2020).
Disruption of the lipid bilayer integrity, leading to increased permeability and leakage of intracellular contents, and inhibition of membrane-bound enzymes or transport proteins (StatPearls, 2023; PubChem, 2024).
