Overview

The oral bacterial cell membrane and dental biofilm matrix represent a complex structural target essential for the survival and pathogenicity of oral microbiota. The bacterial cell membrane provides a semi-permeable barrier that maintains cellular homeostasis, while the dental biofilm matrix, composed of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) like polysaccharides, proteins, and extracellular DNA, acts as a protective scaffold for microbial communities (NIH, 2020). This matrix facilitates adhesion to tooth surfaces and protects bacteria from host immune responses and antimicrobial agents by limiting diffusion (PubMed, 2017). In the context of oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontitis, these structures are primary targets for antiseptic agents. Drugs like chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride work by disrupting the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane, causing leakage of intracellular contents, and destabilizing the biofilm matrix to allow for mechanical removal (StatPearls, 2023). Targeting these structures is crucial for controlling plaque accumulation and preventing the progression of inflammatory oral conditions.
