Overview

Oral bacterial surface components and volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) represent a complex group of biological and chemical entities involved in oral health and disease. Bacterial surface components, such as fimbriae and lipopolysaccharides, are critical for the adhesion of pathogens to oral tissues and the formation of complex biofilms known as dental plaque (PubMed: 20643938). Volatile sulfur compounds, primarily hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, are produced by anaerobic bacteria during the proteolytic degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids (StatPearls: Halitosis). These compounds are the primary cause of halitosis and have been shown to be toxic to gingival tissues, potentially exacerbating periodontal disease by increasing mucosal permeability (Journal of Breath Research, 2013). Therapeutic strategies targeting these entities include the use of antimicrobial agents like chlorhexidine to reduce bacterial populations and metal ions like zinc to chemically neutralize VSCs. Effective management of these targets is essential for treating oral malodor and maintaining periodontal health.
