Overview

The term oral bacterium refers to the diverse community of microorganisms that reside within the human oral cavity, collectively forming the oral microbiome. This ecosystem includes over 700 species of bacteria that typically exist in complex biofilm communities, such as dental plaque, which protect them from environmental stressors and host immune responses (Dewhirst et al., 2010). While most oral bacteria are commensal and contribute to host health by preventing the colonization of exogenous pathogens, an ecological shift or overgrowth of specific species can lead to localized diseases such as dental caries and periodontitis (Marsh, 2003). Furthermore, the translocation of oral bacteria or their inflammatory byproducts into the bloodstream has been linked to systemic conditions, including infective endocarditis, diabetes, and atherosclerosis (Hajishengallis, 2015). Because oral bacterium is a general taxonomic category rather than a specific molecular entity like a receptor or enzyme, it is considered an overly broad designation for a therapeutic target. Pharmacological strategies in this area typically focus on specific bacterial enzymes, metabolic pathways, or the physical disruption of the biofilm matrix (StatPearls, 2023).
