Oral cavity environment

The oral cavity environment is the sum of physical, chemical, and biological factors within the mouth, including saliva, tissues (teeth, gingiva, mucosa), and the wide diversity of resident microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, archaea). This dynamic ecosystem serves as a barrier and interface between the body and the external world, constantly exposed to diet, temperature fluctuations, and mechanical forces. It is characterized by the formation of multispecies biofilms on hard and soft tissue surfaces and is critical not only to oral but also to systemic health. Perturbations in the oral environment—such as changes to pH, immune system, or microbial community—can lead to oral diseases like caries and periodontitis and have been associated with effects on overall health, including cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
