Overview

Oral dysbiosis refers to a state of imbalance in the complex microbial ecosystem of the oral cavity, where the transition from a symbiotic to a pathogenic community triggers localized and systemic inflammation (NIH, 2024). Unlike a single molecular target, it involves a shift in the relative abundance of various bacterial species, notably the overgrowth of 'pathobionts' such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia within dental biofilms (PubMed, PMC7271312). The healthy oral microbiome performs critical functions including the prevention of pathogen colonization and the education of the mucosal immune system. When dysbiosis occurs, it serves as the primary etiological factor for dental caries and periodontal disease, and is increasingly linked to systemic pathologies like cardiovascular disease and diabetes through the dissemination of bacteria and inflammatory mediators (StatPearls, 2023). Therapeutic interventions do not target a specific human receptor but instead focus on ecological shifts using broad-spectrum or targeted antimicrobials, probiotics, and mechanical biofilm removal to restore a health-associated microbial equilibrium (Journal of Oral Microbiology, 2021).
