Overview

Oral microbial cell membranes are the essential lipid bilayer structures that define the boundary of bacteria and fungi within the oral cavity, serving as a critical interface between the organism and its environment. These membranes are responsible for maintaining cellular homeostasis, facilitating the transport of nutrients and ions, and housing proteins involved in signal transduction and energy metabolism (NCBI, 2021). In oral pathology, the integrity of these membranes is vital for the survival of pathogens in dental plaque and biofilms, which contribute to conditions such as dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Therapeutic agents like chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride target these membranes through electrostatic attraction to negatively charged components, leading to membrane pore formation, loss of semi-permeability, and the lethal leakage of vital intracellular contents (StatPearls, 2023). While effective for broad-spectrum microbial control, targeting these membranes can lead to clinical challenges such as extrinsic tooth staining, mucosal irritation, and potential shifts in the oral microbiome (PubMed, 2019). Consequently, while they are a primary target for antiseptic intervention, their non-specific nature requires careful management to maintain oral health.
