Overview

The oral mucosa and microbiota constitute a complex biological interface essential for maintaining local and systemic health. The oral mucosa acts as a physical and immunological barrier, while the oral microbiota comprises over 700 species of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that exist in a symbiotic relationship with the host (Dewhirst et al., 2010, Journal of Bacteriology). This system plays a critical role in immune system priming and protection against pathogenic colonization (Lamont et al., 2018, Nature Reviews Microbiology). Dysbiosis, or the disruption of this microbial balance, is a primary driver of oral diseases such as periodontitis and dental caries, and has been increasingly linked to systemic conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular disease (Hajishengallis, 2015, Nature Reviews Immunology). While not a single molecular target, the oral environment is modulated by various pharmacological agents, including antiseptics like chlorhexidine and targeted antibiotics, which aim to restore homeostasis (Marsh, 2010, Journal of Dental Research). Therapeutic challenges include the risk of antimicrobial resistance and the difficulty of selectively targeting pathogens without harming beneficial commensal organisms. Emerging therapies also explore the use of probiotics and prebiotics to actively shape the microbial community toward a health-associated state (Kuru et al., 2017, Journal of Oral Microbiology).
