Overview

The Oral Mucosa and Oral Microbiome represent a complex physiological and ecological system within the human oral cavity. The oral mucosa serves as the primary physical and immunological barrier, lining the mouth and protecting underlying tissues from mechanical stress and pathogenic invasion (StatPearls, 2023). Residing on and within this tissue is the oral microbiome, a diverse community of over 700 species of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that play a critical role in maintaining homeostasis through pathogen exclusion and immune system modulation (NIH, 2022; Journal of Oral Microbiology, 2019). Dysbiosis, or an imbalance in this microbial community, is a primary driver of oral diseases such as periodontitis and dental caries, and has been increasingly linked to systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease and diabetes (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2018). Therapeutic strategies targeting this system include the use of antimicrobials to reduce pathogen loads, probiotics to restore healthy flora, and agents that enhance mucosal barrier function or local immune responses (Cochrane Database, 2017).
