Overview

Oral mucosa hydration is a physiological state determined by the dynamic balance of fluid absorption and clearance in the oral cavity[1][2][3]. Adequate hydration is maintained primarily through constant secretion of saliva and regulated absorption of water and electrolytes through the oral mucosal tissue. The molecular mechanisms governing mucosal fluid transport include aquaporins (water channel proteins), epithelial sodium channels, Na+/H+ exchangers, and paracellular movement via tight junctions[1][2]. Specialized mucins in saliva (e.g., MG1) bind to and coat the mucosal surface, further maintaining hydration, lubrication, and protective barriers[3]. Disturbance of these processes, such as reduced saliva production, excessive mucosal fluid absorption, or impaired mucin binding, results in mucosal dehydration (xerostomia), which can impair oral comfort, increase infection risk, and impede wound healing[1][4][5]. There is currently no single molecular target designated as the "oral mucosa hydration target," making this entry non-canonical from a pharmacological or therapeutic perspective.
