Oral Mucosal Barrier

Molecular classification
Epithelial Tissue, Structural Protein (Keratin), Glycoprotein (Mucin)
01

Overview

The oral mucosal barrier is a complex system that protects the oral cavity from physical, chemical, and microbial insults. It primarily consists of stratified squamous epithelium (with or without keratinization), a basement membrane, and an underlying connective tissue (lamina propria). The barrier is further enhanced by the secretion of mucus rich in mucins, which lubricates and traps pathogens. While not a single druggable target, it is a crucial structure influencing overall oral health and a frequent site of drug action or drug-induced toxicity.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable as this is a system, not a single druggable target. However, many drugs aim to reinforce or repair the barrier, reduce inflammation, or address underlying causes of barrier damage.
