Oral mucosal cells are a diverse group of epithelial and connective tissue cells forming the lining of the oral cavity[1][3][2][5]. These cells primarily include keratinocytes (either keratinized or non-keratinized), and are organized as a stratified squamous epithelium overlying a connective lamina propria[1][2][3][5]. Oral mucosal cells function as a resilient barrier against mechanical, chemical, and microbial insults, and play key roles in immune surveillance, sensation, and maintaining oral homeostasis[1][5]. They are not a specific molecular target but a broad cellular compartment, and “local oral mucosal cells” is not recognized as a canonical therapeutic target, enzyme, or receptor[1][3][5]. The oral mucosa contains three main histological types: lining mucosa (non-keratinized, in lips, buccal mucosa, floor of mouth), masticatory mucosa (keratinized, in gingiva and hard palate), and specialized mucosa (tongue, taste buds, sometimes keratinized)[1][2][3][5]. The main function is protection, but it also provides immune defense, wound healing, and in the tongue, sensation[3][1][5]. Alterations or diseases of oral mucosal cells are commonly linked to cancer, inflammation, infection, and systemic disease manifestations[3][1]. “Local oral mucosal cells” is a descriptive anatomical or histologic term, not a specific therapeutic target; there are no established drugs or biomarkers that directly interact with or select for all oral mucosal cells as a unit.
