Overview

Oral mucosal moisture refers to the hydration status of the tissue lining the oral cavity. It is maintained primarily by the secretion from major and minor salivary glands, and to a lesser extent by moisture retention mechanisms including epithelial permeability, tight junction regulation, and the oral mucosal fluid/pellicle films. Adequate moisture protects the oral mucosa from dryness, abrasion, infection, and discomfort, ensures proper oral function (taste, speech, mastication), and buffers pH. Deficiency or imbalance contributes to "dry mouth" (xerostomia) and increased risk for oral injury and infection[1][2][3][4][5].
