Oral mucosal moisture refers to the hydration status of the tissue lining the oral cavity. It is maintained primarily by the secretion from major and minor salivary glands, and to a lesser extent by moisture retention mechanisms including epithelial permeability, tight junction regulation, and the oral mucosal fluid/pellicle films. Adequate moisture protects the oral mucosa from dryness, abrasion, infection, and discomfort, ensures proper oral function (taste, speech, mastication), and buffers pH.
