Overview

The oral mucosal mucin network is a complex, hydrated gel layer covering the oral cavity's surfaces, primarily composed of high-molecular-weight glycoproteins known as mucins, specifically MUC5B and MUC7 (Frenkel & Ribbeck, 2015). This network serves as a critical physiological barrier, providing essential lubrication to facilitate speech and swallowing while protecting the underlying epithelium from mechanical trauma, dehydration, and pathogenic invasion (Nieuw Amerongen et al., 2007). In clinical practice, this network is a primary target for treating xerostomia (dry mouth) and oral mucositis, where the integrity of the mucus layer is compromised (Villa et al., 2015). Therapeutic strategies include the use of secretagogues like pilocarpine to enhance natural mucin production and mucoadhesive polymers that bind to the network to extend the residence time of topical medications (Khutoryanskiy, 2011). Understanding the rheological and adhesive properties of this network is vital for the development of effective oral drug delivery systems and artificial saliva formulations (Cook & Khutoryanskiy, 2015).
