Oral Mucosal Surface

Molecular classification
Tissue, Epithelium, Connective Tissue
01

Overview

The oral mucosal surface is the mucous membrane lining the inside of the mouth. It is a highly organized, avascular, and semipermeable tissue composed of stratified squamous epithelium and underlying lamina propria. Its primary functions include barrier protection against mechanical trauma and pathogens, sensory perception (touch, temperature, taste), immune defense, and absorption. The oral mucosa exhibits rapid healing capabilities.
