The oral-pharyngeal mucosa refers to the continuous mucous membrane lining the oral cavity and pharynx. It is composed chiefly of stratified squamous epithelial cells resting on connective tissue and houses immune cells such as dendritic cells, lymphocytes, and macrophages. This mucosa serves as a robust physical and immunological barrier that protects underlying tissues from mechanical trauma, pathogens, and toxins, while also facilitating secretion (primarily saliva), taste, and sensory reception.
