Overview

Oral soft tissue cells represent a heterogeneous population of cells, including stratified squamous keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and various immune cells, that form the lining of the oral cavity (StatPearls, "Physiology, Oral Mucosa", 2023). These cells function as a critical biological barrier, protecting underlying tissues from mechanical stress, chemical irritants, and microbial invasion (NCBI, PMC6513929). In disease states, these cells are central to the pathogenesis of conditions such as periodontitis, where gingival fibroblasts and epithelial cells respond to bacterial biofilms by producing inflammatory cytokines (PubMed, 31111314). While these cells are not a single molecular target, specific proteins within them, such as toll-like receptors or growth factor receptors, are targeted by drugs like chlorhexidine for antimicrobial effects or corticosteroids for inflammatory lesions (Mayo Clinic, "Oral Health"). Therapeutic interventions often aim to modulate the regenerative capacity of these cells to treat oral ulcers or to inhibit their malignant transformation in oral squamous cell carcinoma (NIH, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research). Additionally, these cells are involved in the absorption of transmucosal drugs, making them a focus for systemic delivery via the buccal or sublingual routes.
