These bacteria play a central role in forming biofilms on teeth and mucosal surfaces—commonly known as dental plaque—and are key contributors to both oral health and disease. Some members like *S. mutans* are major agents of dental caries due to their ability to metabolize sugars into acids that demineralize tooth enamel[3][5][7]. Others can act as opportunistic pathogens causing infective endocarditis if they enter the bloodstream through damaged oral tissues[6]. The taxonomy is complex; "oral streptococci" is not a single molecular target but rather an ecological grouping encompassing several distinct bacterial species with varying pathogenic potential[1][2][3][5].
