Overview

The oral surfaces and microbiota represent a complex biological ecosystem comprising the hard and soft tissues of the mouth and the diverse community of microorganisms that inhabit them (Dewhirst et al., 2010, Journal of Bacteriology). This environment includes over 700 species of bacteria, along with fungi, viruses, and protozoa, which typically exist in a symbiotic relationship with the host (Kilian et al., 2016, British Dental Journal). The microbiota forms structured biofilms on surfaces such as tooth enamel and the gingival epithelium, playing a crucial role in maintaining oral health by preventing the colonization of exogenous pathogens (Marsh, 2006, BMC Oral Health). However, an imbalance in this community, known as dysbiosis, is a primary driver of oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease (NIH/NIDCR). Therapeutic interventions often target this system to reduce pathogenic load, disrupt harmful biofilms, or restore a healthy microbial balance through the use of antiseptics, antibiotics, and remineralizing agents. Common agents include chlorhexidine for broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and fluoride for promoting tooth surface remineralization (StatPearls, 2023). Understanding the interactions within this ecosystem is vital for developing targeted therapies that manage local infections while preserving beneficial commensal flora.
