Overview

Oral surfaces as reservoirs refers to the various anatomical and biological niches within the mouth—including the teeth, gingival sulcus, tongue, and mucosal linings—that host diverse and complex microbial populations. These surfaces facilitate the formation of biofilms, which are structured communities of microorganisms embedded in a self-produced matrix that protects them from environmental stressors and host immune responses (Kilian et al., 2016). While these reservoirs are essential for maintaining a normal commensal microbiome, they can also harbor opportunistic pathogens responsible for localized diseases such as dental caries and periodontitis (Marsh, 2003). Beyond the oral cavity, these surfaces can act as a source for the systemic dissemination of pathogens via the bloodstream or respiratory tract, potentially contributing to conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and aspiration pneumonia (Saini et al., 2011). Consequently, these surfaces are clinical focal points for preventive and therapeutic strategies aimed at managing microbial load and preventing the translocation of bacteria to other body sites (He et al., 2015). Therapeutic interventions typically involve mechanical debridement or the application of antiseptic and antibiotic agents to disrupt the protective biofilm and restore ecological balance.
