Target intelligence / Profile preview

Orexin Neuron (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Neuron, Neuroendocrine cell
01

Overview

Orexin neurons are specialized neurons located in the lateral hypothalamus that produce and release orexin neuropeptides (also known as hypocretins). These neurons play a central role in regulating arousal, wakefulness, feeding behavior, energy homeostasis, and autonomic functions. Activation of these neurons promotes sustained arousal/wakefulness. Orexin neurons project widely throughout the brain, including to monoaminergic nuclei such as the locus coeruleus, ventral tegmental area, and tuberomammillary nucleus.
