Organ support

01

Overview

The term "organ support" refers broadly to the use of medical technology, pharmacologic therapies, or devices to maintain or replace the function of failing organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, or liver in critically ill patients. Examples include mechanical ventilation for lungs, dialysis for kidneys, inotropes for cardiac support, and extracorporeal life support (ECMO). "Organ support" is not itself a molecule or receptor, but rather a therapeutic strategy or clinical intervention. No molecular target or single biological macromolecule is associated with this term.
