Organic anion transporter 10 (OAT10), encoded by the SLC22A13 gene, is a transmembrane protein belonging to the OAT family. Primarily expressed in the kidney, it functions as a secondary active transporter for various organic anions, including nicotinate, β-hydroxybutyrate, p-aminohippurate, orotate, and urate. OAT10 plays a crucial role in renal urate handling and has been implicated in gout and hyperuricemia. Loss-of-function variants in SLC22A13 reduce serum uric acid levels and lower gout risk, suggesting that targeting OAT10 may be a therapeutic strategy for these conditions. It also interacts with MCT1, which can influence substrate selectivity. Due to its broad substrate specificity, OAT10 can affect the pharmacokinetics and toxicity of various drugs and toxins.
