Organic Anion Transporter 4 (OAT4), encoded by the SLC22A11 gene, is a member of the organic anion transporter family. Primarily located on the apical membrane of renal proximal tubule cells, it functions as an organic anion/dicarboxylate exchanger, mediating the transport of various endogenous and exogenous organic anions, including steroid sulfates and clinically important drugs. OAT4 plays a crucial role in renal drug disposition and the handling of uremic toxins, influencing drug efficacy, toxicity, and kidney disease pathophysiology. Its activity is modulated by interactions with PDZ domain-containing scaffold proteins, affecting its surface expression and transport capacity.
