Organic Anion Transporting Polypeptide (OATP)

Target
OATP
Molecular classification

01

Overview

Organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) are a superfamily of membrane-bound transport proteins that mediate the sodium-independent uptake of a wide variety of endogenous and exogenous organic anions, as well as some neutral and cationic compounds, into cells. They are classified within the solute carrier (SLC) transporter family and play critical roles in hepatic drug clearance, intestinal absorption, and blood-brain barrier transport. Genetic polymorphisms and drug interactions involving OATPs can significantly impact drug efficacy and toxicity.
