Organic contaminants represent a heterogeneous classification of exogenous, carbon-based compounds that are typically identified as environmental pollutants rather than therapeutic targets. This group includes persistent organic pollutants (POPs), endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and emerging contaminants such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) (NIEHS, 2024). From a pharmacological perspective, these molecules are significant as toxins or xenobiotics that interact with biological systems, often leading to adverse outcomes such as DNA damage, hormonal imbalance, or metabolic disruption (EPA, 2023). They are known to bind to and activate specific pathways, most notably the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and various steroid receptors, which can trigger the expression of Phase I and II detoxification enzymes (PubMed, 2022). Because "organic contaminants" is a broad environmental category rather than a specific, druggable biological entity, it does not meet the criteria for a therapeutic target in drug discovery. Instead, research focuses on their removal from the environment and the mitigation of their toxicological impact on human health (WHO, 2023). These substances are often characterized by their environmental persistence and ability to bioaccumulate in the food chain, posing long-term risks to biodiversity and human populations. Monitoring these contaminants involves measuring their concentrations in biological fluids or tissues to assess exposure levels and potential health correlations.
